Effect of Fatty Foods on Acne

There is one question that lingers in the minds of many people "Is there any connection between fatty foods and skin problems like acne?" There is no strong evidence to prove that consuming fatty or oily foods causes acne in people. But there are no proofs to say that there is no connection between unhealthy food intake and skin conditions either. We will not be able to give a simple or a plain straight forward answer to the question. Unhealthy food does not directly affect the skin; it is for sure that what you eat will affect your body and your health. As skin is the largest organ of your body, it is sure to be influenced in some way or the other by the bad foods you consume.

Our body and our general health have a detrimental effect when you consume junk foods which are greasy, salty and have much sugar content. If your skin is prone to acne, then having all these junk foods will affect your skin adversely and in some people having acne, we may see the severe symptoms of acne. Taking in huge quantities of refined carbohydrates, fats and sugars can lead to increased production of insulin by the pancreas. These will in turn results in increased production of male hormones called androgen, which will induce hyperactivity of sebaceous glands resulting in excessive sebum production. The sebum this produced clogs the pores in the skin and this attracts bacteria causing severe outbreaks of acne.

Of the different types of fats, saturated fats are more prone to cause acne and hence have to be completely avoided. Saturated fats can affect our immune system, promotes inflammation as well as increased oil production by the skin. This increase in oil production results in the outbreak of acne. To keep your body healthy and nourished, health promoting nutrients, vitamins and minerals are essential. Though saturated fats are more critical for acne patients, some other fatty acids are essential to keep your body healthy. Oils like flax oil, fish oil, olive oil are all healthy for ingestion and it is recommended that you add a little bit of these oils in your daily diet.

Food items like fried, fatty foods, chocolates, milk, ice cream and cheeses are a big no- no to acne patients. It is also not advisable to take aerate drinks and alcohols when you are having acne as these may cause acne to worsen. Although the complete effect of fatty foods on acne is yet to be researched and to reach conclusions, it is better to avoid such foods causing ill effects on your body and skin. For some people, these types of fatty foods can really aggravate acne. Including more of fruits and vegetables in the place of fatty foods and refined carbohydrates is a safe bet at any given point of time. Having proper diet with less fat content and drinking lots of water can improve your acne condition far better than any over the counter medications.
